Employment Scams FAQ’s

Employment frauds over the internet

A significant number of offences have been reported recently via Fraud Alert that involve false offers of employment.

The principal job offers that have come to light are in the Oil Industry and Financial Services.

However, other jobs, including childminding have also been targeted. The frauds perpetrated, include ‘Criminal Cashback’, ‘Identity Fraud’ and ‘Advance Fee’ frauds. The fraudsters will also be using fake and copied websites to legitimise their activities. Many of them make enticing offers towards the offence of Money Laundering.

If an email offering a job is received, some basic questions should be asked – did you register with the agency or company that is offering the job?

Do the details check out, including the contact address and phone numbers?

Do they want your personal details, including Banking Details, as part of the application form?

Do they want you to send money to their Travel Agency to pay for flights?

Is money being requested prior to taking up the apparent position?

One should consider as to whether such requests are really necessary.
